They are known as the "Gentleman Giants" of the horse world. Considered by many to be Britain's finest heavyweight horses, the magnificent Shire is believed to be descended from the medieval horse known as the Great Horse or English Black. Although originally developed for military purposes, this heavy horse breed, later referred to as the Shire, became increasingly important as a farming and general load-bearing horse as farming became more complex and transportation became more important.
