Octopus ink serves not only for concealment, but also for offensive purposes. The ink contains a compound called tyrosinase that helps control melanin production. When an octopus sprays ink into the eyes of an attacking predator, tyrosinase damages its eyes and blocks their vision. It also disrupts the senses of taste and smell of living things. This defense mix is so strong that an octopus that cannot escape its own ink cloud can die.
