The herbivorous dinosaur genus Triceratops has two confirmed species: Triceratops horridus and Triceratops prorsus. Both lived during the Late Cretaceous period (68-65 MÖ) and ended in the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction event that wiped out all dinosaurs. Triceratops were rhino-like animals weighing many tons. An adult Triceratops is thought to weigh in at around seven tons. They were both heavily armored and very strong, with bone horns that could exceed 70 cm and a solid bone frill. Thanks to these features, both Triceratops species were successful in resisting potential predators: They could attack with their pointed horns and punch holes in the body of the enemy and break their bones.
