They occur between latitudes 40° north and 40° south of the equator. In Europe they are found only off the coast of Gibraltar. It is thought that they also came from Africa. They are studied in two groups: Old World monkeys in Asia and Africa and New World monkeys in Central and South America. New World monkeys are abundant in the wet forests of South America. They use their tails as a third hand for hugging, grasping, swinging, climbing and foraging. They deftly use their tails to rescue fallen cubs and move from one tree to another.
