Until the Middle Ages, people believed that unicorns were real. The origins of the unicorn legend go back to approximately 400 BC. An animal resembling this creature was documented for the first time by the Greek historian Ctesias in his writings on the geography of India. Traces of unicorn depictions can be seen in the following centuries. Examples include the writings of important historical figures such as Aristotle, Pliny the Elder, and even Julius Caesar, who claimed that similar animals could be found in Germany's ancient and vast Hercynian Forest.
